Tat Tvam Asi: That You Are!

After years of distancing himself from his roots, the son of an Indian migrant visits his ancestral home for the first time, only to discover that the heritage he tried to outrun is the one he cannot live without.
Tat Tvam Asi is an intimate, reflective short film exploring self-discovery through the lens of a second-generation immigrant performing the ultimate act of filial piety. By returning to India for the first time to return his father to the earth, the protagonist moves through quiet encounters and cultural textures that challenge his Western cynicism.
At its heart is a universal question: what do we lose when we distance ourselves from our origins? Rooted in the ancient Sanskrit wisdom – Tat Tvam Asi -that the self is inseparable from the whole, the film offers a deeply personal meditation on grief, cultural memory, and the journey to feel whole again.

Producer’s Vision

My vision for Tat Tvam Asi was to adapt a visceral chapter from my novel, Trishanku, into a high-caliber cinematic “Proof of Concept” for a serialized OTT adaptation.

As a producer, I intentionally chose a 28-minute format to allow for the character-driven pacing and narrative depth often lost in shorter formats. This film demonstrates that there is a sophisticated, underserved market for diaspora narratives that bridge the gap between Western aesthetics and Indian philosophical depth. By premiering at elite festivals, I am positioning the Trishanku IP as a market-ready property. This film serves as a visual pilot, showcasing a world ripe for expansion into a multi-season series that explores the full, complex landscape of the South Asian identity.
